On 6 February 2007 a jury chaired by the Aragonese Regional Government’s Vice-Councillor for Education, Culture and Sport and consisting of Pilar Navarrete Hernández, Director General of Culture, José Luis Borau Moradell, of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Mª Ángeles Cañada Peña, member of the San Luis Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Pedro Sancristóbal Murúa, member of the National Association of Art Critics, José Luis Pano Gracia, member of the Department of Art History at the University of Zaragoza, Cristina Giménez Navarro, member of the Department of Art History at the University of Zaragoza and the fine artist Ignacio Guelbenzu Morte awarded the Aragón-Goya 2007 Prize to José Hernández ‘in recognition of a career which has made the Spanish school of painting his own through a unique, objective and personal body of work, as well as his independence and commitment, which means he is well positioned to bring Goya's work to the attention of the general public.’
Following the award of this prize, the Zaragoza Museum has mounted a representative exhibition of the artist’s works.
